The requirements for the development of cut flower production for export, in India, are discussed. Roses, carnations and chrysanthemums are considered the most suitable crops as they have the largest market, have good shelf-life, can be shipped and have a high customer value. The specific problems of each crop are mentioned. Factors affecting the postharvest quality (maturity at harvest, temperature, carbohydrate reserves, water supply, bacterial and physiological plugging, water quality, ethylene, mechanical damage and disease) as well as postharvest management techniques to maintain flower quality are discussed.
