Factors influencing the sugar content of cane delivered are discussed under the following: factors affecting maturity (variety, soil, fertilizers, irrigation, climate); crop age at harvest; flowering; crop lodging; adverse factors (drought, waterlogging, diseases, pests); chemical ripeners; harvesting methods (manual or mechanical, with or without burning, heights of cutting and topping); postharvest deterioration; management and control of cane harvesting and cane transport in the operational zone. Data are tabulated for: effects of applied N on juice quality of cane at harvesting; effects of sheath moisture on sugar recovery; juice quality of lodged and unlodged cane; trials on chemical ripeners (Polaris, sodium metasilicate), and postharvest deterioration of cv. Co.6304.
