Model for relating the storage life of tomato fruit to different ripening characteristics.

A multiple regression model was devised to determine the relation between fruit storage life and various ripening characteristics, such as maximum respiration, maximum ethylene production, fruit firmness at different stages, coloration and activity of polygalacturonase. The model was applied to data from genotypes with normal fruit ripening, mutants of the postharvest ripening type, hybrids between normal material and the postharvest ripening form Alcobaca, and hybrids between Alcobaca and other postharvest ripening mutants. The best coefficient of determination was given by the regression equation relating storage life (entered as a cumulative storage index) with polygalacturonase activity.
