The techniques used for in vitro conservation of horticultural species differ according to the storage duration required. For short- to medium-term conservation (several months to 2-3 years), growth reduction is sought in order to increase the interval between subcultures. The main parameters (temperature, culture medium, gaseous environment, and type and physiological stage of the explants) which are modified to limit organogenesis are discussed. For long-term storage, cryopreservation is the only technique currently available. The standard cryopreservation technique is briefly described and new techniques (encapsulation/dehydration, vitrification and use of a domestic freezer) are discussed. Horticultural species for which medium- and long-term storage have been used are listed.
