Changes in the contents of carbohydrates in ovaries from cut 'Sonia' roses stored at 2 deg C and then kept at 20 deg C.

Rosa hybrida (cv. Sonia) stems were placed in 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (200 mg/litre) and held at 20 deg C, or transferred to 20 deg after 3, 4, 5, 6 or 12 days' storage at 2 deg . Ovaries were dissected from 3 flowers on days 0, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 12 for cold-stored flowers and at 3-day intervals for flowers at 20 deg , and the soluble sugar and starch contents of the ovaries were determined. The starch content of the ovaries decreased by over 50% in the first 3 days, at both 2 deg and 20 deg . The soluble sugar content did not vary significantly during 12 days' storage at 2 deg or 20 deg . Sucrose content was generally higher than glucose and fructose contents. No relationship was detected between changes in starch and soluble sugar contents. It is suggested that the ratio of soluble sugars to starch could potentially be used to determine how long roses have been cold-stored for, and hence their internal quality.
