The keeping quality of pot plants of 14 poinsettia cultivars (Groji, Pacestar, Subjisil, Cap Esperante, Goldfinger, Regal Velvet, Subjibi, Fuego, Angelika, Red Sails, Diamond, Franzi, Steffi and Lilo) obtained from 2 growers was assessed during Nov.-Dec. 1990 and Dec. 1990-Jan. 1991. In a further 2 experiments, the keeping quality of pot plants of poinsettia (cv. Angelika) from 12 growers and of Dieffenbachia (cv. Camilla) from 8 growers was assessed during Nov.-Dec. 1989 and Jan.-Feb. 1990, respectively. In the 3 experiments the plants were divided into 2 groups. One group received transport simulation (7 days' darkness at 17 deg C, 90% RH in experiment 1, and 7 days' darkness at 15 deg , 80% RH in experiments 2 and 3), before placing under simulated home and office conditions (400 lux, 20 deg /15 deg day/night temperatures, 12 h daylength and 60% RH). The other group received no transport simulation. The ornamental value was assessed weekly, using a scale from 0 to 5. Keeping quality was deter mined by counting the number of weeks when the ornamental value was more than or equal to 2. The mean keepability of the 14 poinsettia cultivars was 5 weeks without transport simulation and 3 weeks with transport simulation. Cultivars Lilo and Steffi had the highest keeping quality after transport simulation. There was a marked difference between growers in the keeping quality of cv. Angelika in experiment 2 (2-9 weeks and 4-10 weeks with and without transport simulation, respectively). The ornamental value of Dieffenbachia after 6 weeks' storage also differed markedly between growers (0-5 and 1.8-5 with and without transport simulation, respectively).
