Tulip flowers (cv. Apeldoorn) were harvested at the recommended maturity stage, recut, wrapped in paper in bunches of 10 and placed in water at 2 deg C for 1 h. FW was determined. The flowers were then stored in water, dry-stored wrapped in paper or dry-stored with each flower lying separate on a shelf at 2 deg for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 days. After storage the stems were recut, and bunches were wrapped in paper and placed in water at 2 deg for 1 h. FW was again determined. Quality during vase life was determined at 20 deg , 60-80% RH and irradiance at 7.5 W/m2 during a 12 h photoperiod. Flowers stored in water showed an increase in FW after all storage periods. Dry-stored flowers wrapped in paper showed an increase in FW after 1, 2 and 3 days' storage but showed a decrease in FW after 4 and 5 days' storage. Dry-stored unwrapped flowers showed an increase in FW after 1 day of storage but thereafter showed a decrease. A decrease in FW corresponded with a visual decline in flower quality, shown as deformed flowers, with poor colour and paper-like petals.
