A postharvest processing unit designed to handle turnip-shaped onions of semi-sharp and sweet types, easily damaged due to their inherent softness, is described and its schematic diagram is shown. Onions with most leaves cut off prior to processing are transported from an input hopper onto a soil separator, into a gravity cleaner, and by a conveyor belt onto an inspection table. After manual size sorting into standard, sub-standard and damaged categories the crop is transported into respective containers. The unit's performance is compared with a postharvest onion processing unit STS-1.5 Melnik, manufactured in Czechoslovakia, which contains a deleafing mechanism; its output is 2 t/h.
