The effects of 6 postharvest fungicide treatments on the keeping quality of litchis (cv. Madras) after storage under simulated sea shipment conditions (30 days at 2 deg C followed by 1 week at 21 deg ) were investigated. They comprised (1) dipping fruits in a prochloraz solution at 0.5 g/litre, (2) dipping + packing in Everfresh (mineral-impregnated) plastic bags, (3) SO2 fumigation at 20 g/32 kg fruit, (4) SO2 + packing in Everfresh bags, (5) SO2 + prochloraz dipping, and (6) SO2 + prochloraz + packing in Everfresh bags. Controls were untreated. The best reduction in postharvest decay was obtained with treatment (6); however, the improvement was not sufficient to guarantee successful shipment from South Africa to overseas markets. The findings were compared with results obtained from similar experiments conducted with cv. Mauritius-type litchis; the latter appear to be greatly superior to Madras in shipping quality.
