Post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables in horticultural state farms.

In most developing countries the area under horticultural crops has expanded, productivity has increased and total production has doubled or tripled. But very little emphasis is given to postharvest technology which is the vital sector of this industry. Four years' production, postharvest loss and % of postharvest loss data for 10 major fruit and 10 major vegetable crops grown by state farms in Ethiopia are presented. Three years' data of export operation are also presented to illustrate the trend in postharvest losses for major export crops. The major operational problems that lead to these postharvest losses are discussed together with recommendations for the reduction of losses.
