Colonization of table grape bunches by B. cinerea was studied in the western Cape Province. Periods of greatest susceptibility were determined by estimating the following: natural infection of B. cinerea in bunches during different developmental stages; infection and Botrytis postharvest decay of grapes covered with polyester bags during the growing season and inoculated at defined developmental stages; Botrytis postharvest decay of bunches protected with the dicarboximide fungicide procymidone against natural infections at various stages of bunch development. No evidence was found for a relation between early infection and subsequent disease development or postharvest decay. Postharvest Botrytis decay was largely due to infection during storage by inoculum present in bunches at veraison or during later stages. Fungicides alone did not prevent infection during storage. Effective control was only achieved when grapes sprayed with fungicides were exposed to sulfur dioxide during storage. The findings indicated that fungicide sprays should be applied primarily during veraison and before harvest.
