A simple storage technique for sweet chestnuts.

Following 4-year experiments in ordinary cellars, the following method was devised for storing chestnuts [? Castanea mollissima]. Initially the nuts should be piled in heaps about 30 cm deep to "sweat" for 7 days. After grading and the removal of any pest-damaged nuts, they should be soaked in 0.1% salt solution for 0.5 h and further selected for soundness before soaking in 0.01% KMnO4 solution for 1 h. They are then dried and placed in disinfected polyethylene bags, 0.18 mm thick, and can be stored satisfactorily in cellars or stores for 4-5 months.
