Post-harvest studies on Syringa vulgaris.

Flowering branches of S. vulgaris cv. Mme. Florent Stepman were harvested from the beginning of Dec. to the end of Apr. in the 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons. The stems were recut after transport and placed in water of 5, 10 or 20 cm depth. The lower 30 cm of stems was cut into 3 cm segments, the bark was removed and water flow through the segments was measured for 1 h. An aqueous solution of a red pigment (rhodamine, 1 g/litre) was used for measurement of water flow through the whole stem. The vase life of the stems decreased from Jan. onwards. Flow rate in the 3 cm stem segments varied with segment position but was lowest at the water/air layer. After 7 days in vase water, the height of the rhodamine-coloured column was lower in stems placed in 5 cm water than in stems placed in 20 cm water. 8-Hydroxyquinoline sulphate (HQS, 0.3 g/litre) in the vase water increased water flow through the stem and delayed wilting. Examination of the structure of the xylem in stems placed in 5 cm or 20 cm of water, with or without HQS, indicated that blockage of the xylem is due to formation of tyloses.
