CNIH, together with professionals in the horticultural industry, has worked out specifications for maintaining the quality of cut flowers. These include essential recommendations covering growing techniques, harvesting stage, use of appropriate preservatives, an uninterrupted cold chain and control of ethylene. Objective criteria for following up and controlling quality are essential. CNIH studied a series of tests aimed at environmental control (temperature, RH, ethylene level, microbiological control of holding water and rooms), as well as at control of the product itself (control of pretreatment with silver salts in carnations and microbiological control in rose stem bases). Tests on the latter are discussed in detail. Applying the specifications under real-life conditions will allow refinement of the recommendations before they are applied full-scale to the French horticultural industry.
