The cultivar Nittany originated from a seed collected from a cultivar York fruit in 1962. It is a presumed cross between cultivars York and Golden Delicious. The effects of the following treatments on storage quality were evaluated: (a) preharvest Ca sprays (Ca as 77% flake CaCl2 at 4.4 kg/ha (1.58 kg Ca) or as Stopit at 9.34 litres/ha (1.80 kg Ca)), applied 8 times from 20 May (19 days after full bloom) to 12 Sep., (b) postharvest Ca drenches [unspecified], and/or (c) storage at 0-2 deg C in controlled atmospheres (1.5% O2 or 3.5% O2 + 1.5-4.0% CO2) or in air. Fruits were stored for up to 212 days. Storage decay (caused by Aspergillus, Botrytis, Penicillium and Venturia) was least and fruit firmness retention was best in fruits receiving both preharvest sprays and postharvest drenches, and stored in controlled atmospheres.
