Various postharvest treatments were applied to fruits of the cultivars Mauritius and Madras before cold storage at 1, 3 or 6 deg C (Mauritius) or 2 or 6 deg (Madras). In both cultivars, SO2 fumigation gave acceptable control of postharvest decay when followed by refrigeration for 28 days. A prochloraz dip at 250 p.p.m. for 10 minutes was also effective. Wrapping materials such as ordinary or Everfresh (mineral-impregnated) polyethylene bags and Vitafilm carton overwrapping were found to increase decay development significantly. A hot benomyl dip (500 p.p.m. at 52 deg for 2 minutes) did not give effective control. Fruits were assessed by a taste panel. Where SO2 fumigation had been used, 44% of the panel rated the taste as poor and sulphurous; fruits dipped in prochloraz or benomyl were also considered to have poor flavour by the same percentage of tasters.
