Maturity and postharvest handling of Michigan sweet cherries.

Methods of improving cherry quality were investigated. It was found that drop heights to hard surfaces should not exceed 1 inch, and where drops are greater, the surface should be covered by a quarter to one-eighth inch thick layer of sponge cushioning. Prolonged postharvest exposure to ambient temp. in the orchard decreased the fruit's potential shelf life and its appearance. For manual sorting, use of SP-30 or fluorescent lighting (200-500 ft-cd) and a dark sorting surface improved sorting accuracy.
