Abiu, or Pouteria caimito, an evergreen tree bearing yellow fruits having a sweet caramel-flavoured, creamy white pulp, is native to the Western Amazon basin of South America. Besides South America it is now grown in Florida, USA, and Northern Australia. The botany, morphology, taxonomy, floral biology and physiology, cultivars and nutritional value of this species are described, and other Pouteria species yielding edible fruits are listed. Soil and climatic requirements, cultural practices used in Queensland and postharvest requirements and marketing are discussed.
