Effects of pre-harvest supplementary irradiance on decorative value and ethylene evolution of Campanula carpatica 'Karl Foerster' flowers.

During greenhouse production, plants of C. carpatica cv. Karl Foerster were given 40, 70 or 100 micro E m-2 s-1 of supplementary irradiance for 22 days before 3 days of simulated shipping treatment at 8 deg C in the dark. Pre-harvest irradiance did not affect the longevity of individual flowers but strongly influenced quality and flower opening. The highest level of supplementary irradiance increased the number of open flowers in the marketing stage and during the postharvest period, and also increased their size and the total flower number per plant. Lower levels of supplementary irradiance increased endogenous ethylene evolution during the postharvest period.
