Thirty supersweet sweetcorn cultivars and breeding lines from field trials in autumn 1989 and spring 1990 in northern Florida were analysed for kernel sugar and pericarp content and evaluated for cob appearance after storage for 9 days at 5 deg C. Kernel sugar content varied by about 50% among the entries, being highest (10%) in Sweetie 82 (homozygous for sh2 and heterozygous for su1) in 1989. Pericarp content varied by about 40% among entries. The lowest after-storage sugar levels (5.3% in 1989, 6.6% in 1990) were about twice the levels previously found in sugary (su1) lines at harvest. Appearance ratings after storage were good, particularly in bicolour line 3714. Husk appearance was generally better in bicolour than in yellow entries. Kernel appearance was acceptable in most entries, although denting was observed in a number of yellow cultivars and lines.
