Gladioli (cv. Friendship) were harvested when the first floret started to open and placed in distilled water or aqueous solutions containing 2 or 4% sucrose and 0.25, 0.5 or 1.0 mM Co, alone and in all combinations. The weight of the container, with and without the flower spike, was determined every 3 days. The longevity of the florets was assessed by noting the days of opening and fading. Sucrose and Co, either alone or combined, increased water uptake and transpirational loss, and increased the FW of the spikes compared with the control; the water loss/water uptake ratio fell below 1 with 0.5 mM Co alone or in combination with 4% sucrose. The longevity of the florets was increased to 6 days with 4% sucrose + 0.5 mM Co compared with 4 days for the control. Vase life was also greater with sucrose and Co in combination than with either alone, the maximum being 12.33 days with 4% sucrose + 0.5 mM Co compared with 7 days for the control.
