Post-harvest of gerbera cutflowers.

The commercial production of Gerbera cut flowers is described. Micropropagated plants are transplanted into rockwool or peat/perlite mixture and grown in fully conditioned greenhouses. Flowers are ready for cutting 2 to 3 months after planting and plants continue to produce flowers for 1 to 2 years. One plant may produce up to 40 flowers/year depending on the cultivar and growing conditions. The importance of harvesting at the right stage of flower maturity, handling, water quality and packing in maintaining postharvest flower quality is discussed.
