The demand for tropical fruits in the European Community has risen considerably in the last decade. However, the continued expansion of the market is constrained by technical problems associated with achieving consistent quality assurance. This paper discusses some of the recent research undertaken, particularly by the Natural Resources Institute, on fruit physiology and biochemistry (harvest maturity, non-destructive assessment techniques, physiological disorders, ripening and heat shock proteins) and postharvest disease control (chemical control, biological control (with reference to Colletotrichum species) and alternative methods of control).
