Post-harvest loss in mango owing to stem-end rot.

The prevalence of stem-end rot of mango, caused by Botryodiplodia theobromae, was surveyed in 161 temporary wholesale and retail stores in 6 major towns in Bangladesh during May-Aug. 1987. Of almost 0.32 million mangoes inspected, 39 596 were infected, resulting in average losses of 12.5%. The incidence of stem-end rot increased with increasing distance of the retail outlet from the production area. Of the 9 most common mango varieties inspected, the highest disease incidence occurred in Kohitoor (16.3%) followed by Himsagar (15.4%) and the lowest in Lakhanbhog (6.4%). In infectivity tests, inoculated fruits of the cultivar Fazli began to show symptoms 24-48 h after inoculation, but when stored at 4 deg C fruits did not show any symptoms for up to 20 d after inoculation. Fruit incubated at room temp. (30 deg ) or in bamboo baskets (33 deg ) developed symptoms 24 h after inoculation, and fruit stored in baskets rotted fastest. It is concluded that transport time and storage facilities are the main contributing factors to the prevalence of stem end rot in mangoes in Bangladesh.
