Post harvest diseases of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) fruits and their control.

Rotted fruits in India yielded 203 fungal isolates, of which Alternaria tenuis [A. alternata], A. solani, Xanthomonas [campestris pv.] vesicatoria, Pseudomonas [syringae pv.] tomato and Rhizopus stolonifer caused the greatest losses. This is the first report of P. syringae pv. tomato from India. Temp. of 25-40 deg C and high RH favoured the development of tomato rots in the open market. Treatment with boric acid (500 mg/100 ml) or copper sulfate (250 mg/100 ml) and storage at 5-10 deg extended the storage life of tomatoes for 3 d, while potassium permanganate (2 mg/100 ml) extended it for 2 d at 5-10 deg but had little effect at higher temp. Wax coating had little effect on storage life at any temp.
