Ten floral and tree preservatives were tested for their effects on postharvest needle retention of Fraser fir (Abies fraseri), an important Christmas tree species. Clorox (sodium hypochlorite) and aspirin caused massive needle loss (99.5 and 72.3% respectively). Three of 6 commercial products caused over 27% needle loss. The other 3 commercial products resulted in 9-13% needle loss, which was not significantly different from that of distilled water. Sugar and 7-Up, two frequently recommended additives for cut Christmas trees, had no significant effect on needle loss (5.3-5.8%). Needle loss was least with no water, but the foliage dried quickly, faded and stiffened.
