Technical aspects of small-scale crop processing of CGPRT crops in rural areas.

All the countries of the Asian and Pacific region are attempting to increase agricultural productivity, to achieve self-sufficiency in food, and enhance the income of participants in the agricultural sector. These goals could be achieved by pursuing an agro-industrialization programme in rural areas, including the development of local-level rural processing. Important considerations in small-scale crop processing in rural areas are explained, and are: (i) sufficient and reliable supply of raw materials, (ii) availability and reliability of power and energy, (iii) use of appropriate equipment and technology, and (iv) technical capability of plant and machine operators. The different processing operations of CGPRT crops are examined, and the employment and income opportunities of processing CGPRT crops are explored.
