Agricultural marketing in South Tahrir area.

A study of marketing in the desert communities of South Tahrir in Egypt is discussed. Included are the market structure; marketing performance of different commodities, especially horticultural crops, groundnuts, and livestock products; and margins and marketing costs. Objectives were: (1) to determine the prevailing marketing pattern in the area; (2) to estimate marketing costs in relation to production costs and margins for the farmer, wholesaler, and retailer; (3) to identify specific marketing problems facing the farmers in the area; and (4) to make suggestions for improvement of marketing in the South Tahrir area. Findings indicated that the main constraints to marketing from the farmer's point of view are poor roads; high transport costs; unsuitable handling which causes postharvest losses; absence of collective power for bargaining; lack of information about prices prevailing in wholesale and retail markets; and bureaucracy faced in dealing with public sector companies. Solutions for over coming these difficulties are suggested.
