Cavendish strawberry (Fragaria ananassa), tested as K83-4, is a seedling of the cross Glooscap x Annapolis made in 1971. Seedlings of the cross were screened for reaction to red stele rot (caused by Phytophthora fragariae) and symptomless plants selected. Plants of Cavendish are moderately vigorous, running well under good growing conditions. Crown size is small to medium. Primary fruits are large, averaging 25.1 g vs 17.0 g for those of Kent. Cavendish outyielded Redcoat and Annapolis at Kentville, Nova Scotia, and Fredericton, New Brunswick but was outyielded by Kent at both locations. Total yields of Cavendish were 27.8 and 20.8 t/ha, respectively, at the 2 locations. Fruits of Cavendish have similar flavour and berry aroma to those of Honeoye and Annapolis, but a stronger flavour than those of Kent. Cavendish fruits are significantly sweeter and less tart than those of Honeoye. Acceptance ratings were in the order Cavendish > Kent > Annapolis > Honeoye. Cavendish is highly resistant to P. fragariae races A4, A6 and A7 and resistant to Verticillium dahliae. Following 3 days of incubation of fruit at 20 deg C and high relative humidity, Cavendish produced fewer fruits with postharvest fruit rot than Kent. Cavendish is moderately resistant to Sphaerotheca macularis.
