Three new higher-yielding and earlier-maturing cultivars, TVx3236, IT82D889 and IT82E18, were compared with a traditional cultivar for their resistance to C. maculatus. Parameters used for comparison were mean number of eggs laid on each cultivar, mean percentage adult emergence, mean daily adult emergence and mean percentage larval mortality. TVx3236 and IT82D889 demonstrated significant resistance to C. maculatus compared with the traditional cultivar. These cultivars caused both significant larval mortality and a reduction in oviposition. C. maculatus showed significant preference for IT82E18, laying significantly more eggs on it than on the traditional cultivar. It is suggested that a seed coat oviposition deterrent factor(s) and a cotyledonal antibiotic factor(s) may be involved in conferring polygenic resistance on TVx3236 and IT82D889.
