Research into the effects of different cold storage conditions on fruits of the cultivar Murcott showed the best results with storage at a constant 6 deg C or 6 deg for 6 days + 14 deg for 1 day. Longer or lower temperature cycles (6 deg for 18 days + 14 deg for 7 days; 2 deg for 18 days + 14 deg for 7 days; 2 deg for 6 days + 14 deg for 1 day) caused greater chilling injury and higher weight loss. The production of ethanol and other metabolites in the juice was low during storage, especially at a constant 6 deg or at 6 deg for 6 days + 14 deg for 1 day, with a marked increase in shelf-life at 20 deg and 70% RH. No endogenous ethylene was produced and, due to their resistance to microbiological infection (with no postharvest protection), these mandarins responded well to 2 months of cold storage, followed by 2 weeks of shelf-life under all the temperatures tested.
