The results of several studies carried out by INRA in the central Rhone valley region are described. Water deficit during the first phase of rapid fruit growth significantly increased fruit size at harvest, whereas water deficit imposed during the final fruit growth phase produced small fruits. TSS was higher in fruits from trees subjected to water deficit during the final growth phase. A restricted water supply also appeared to reduce the incidence of postharvest rotting.
