Cumulative breakage susceptibility, broken corn and foreign material and broken kernels were measured for samples collected as maize moved through harvesting, drying and conveying operations on 8 farms in the mid-central United States. Individual samples were evaluated for seed coat injury, stress cracks, and breakage susceptibility. Test results showed a wide range of breakage susceptibility for the different farm operations, ranging from a low of 3% to a high of nearly 60%. Variations in breakage susceptibility were primarily due to differences in harvest moisture contents, grain drying and cooling methods.
