The types of loss attributable to insects after harvest are discussed and the history of loss assessment over the last 20 yr is reviewed. The results of some of the more reliable loss assessment studies are presented including losses at farm and commercial levels. Other topics discussed include: pest status of stored products insects and the potential for loss (in Europe and Developing Countries and the establishment of Prostephanus truncatus in East Africa); the problem of pesticide resistance; and future needs (pest control, legislation, detection of insect infestation, and loss assessment). This paper was presented at the 8th International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium, Windsor, Ont., Canada, 26-31 Aug. 1990.
