The effects of 2 ripening retardants and 2 packing treatments on the postharvest behaviour of banana bunches (cv. Lacatan) of uniform size and maturity were assessed at storage temperatures of 30-32 deg C. Bunches were dipped for 14 min in GA (150 p.p.m.) + Waxol (6%) or GA (150 p.p.m.) + Benlate (500 p.p.m.). Other bunches were wrapped in polyethylene film together with a vermiculite block that had been soaked in saturated KMnO4 solution to absorb ethylene. The fourth treatment involved wrapping bunches in polyethylene film, perforated for ventilation. Compared with control (untreated) bananas, all of the treatments were beneficial in delaying ripening (the GA treatments) and reducing weight loss and bruising (Waxol and wrapping). Including the vermiculite block inside the polyethylene film further delayed ripening.
