Comparison of the main methods of predicting sugarcane deterioration.

Three parameters were tested for their usefulness as a measure of sugarcane deterioration after harvesting: the contents of oligosaccharides, polysaccharides and alcohol in juice extracted by pressing. These were determined by known methods. All tests were carried out on cane of cv. Ja.60-5. For mechanically harvested burned cane, manually cut burned cane and manually cut green cane, analysed at intervals up to 100 h after harvesting, the relation between the content of each impurity and the cut-to-crush delay is shown in graphs and equations. Statistical analysis showed that: (a) formation of these impurities was substantially less in green than in burned cane; (b) the content of any one of these impurities could be used to estimate the time elapsed between harvesting and crushing of the cane with reasonable accuracy ( plus or minus 15 h, this being twice the s.d.).
