Increasing sugar recovery: the case for improved sugarcane quality.

Relationships between sugarcane quality factors and sugar yield are explained, showing the effects of cane trash content, field soil, postharvest deterioration, harvest systems, and freezing temperatures. A history of the Louisiana Sugarcane Purchase Contract is given and the development of adequate methods of cane sampling and analysis for cane payment is traced. The core/press method, which has given excellent results, is described. Press juice is very similar to factory crusher juice; no such parallel exists in the traditional analysis.
