Quality inspection is an increasingly important requirement of the horticultural industry. As the major multiple retailers take over a greater part of the fruit and vegetable market, they have greater control over the fruit and vegetable suppliers and demand produce of the highest quality. Most quality inspection tasks are still carried out by human inspectors although some specific tasks such as size grading can be performed more reliably by machines. However, human beings are still more versatile and adaptable than machines. Although horticultural inspection jobs may seem to be simple, there are areas where a clear cut decision is difficult and others where the precise information required to make the decision is not available. Factors which affect human performance in grading horticultural produce for quality are reviewed. Performance can be enhanced if attention is given to areas such as training, feedback, workplace design and job design.
