Tomato cultivars Tobol and Rio Grande were treated at the preharvest stage with Ethrel [ethephon] at 125, 250 or 500 p.p.m. or at the postharvest stage with Ethrel (125, 250 or 500 p.p.m.), calcium carbide (2 or 4 g) or potassium permanganate (2 or 4%). Preharvest Ethrel application shortened the ripening period by 8-10 days (compared with the control), depending on dose and cultivar. Rate of ripening increased with increasing dose of Ethrel. Fruits of Rio Grande were more sensitive than those of Tobol to Ethrel. Postharvest Ethrel and calcium carbide treatments shortened the ripening period by 5-6 days in Tobol and by 10-12 days in Rio Grande. Potassium permanganate treatments delayed ripening by 2-5 days, depending on dose and cultivar.
