Fruit maturity indices, harvesting, grade specifications and packing materials for mandarins cv. Kinnow were studied over 10 years. The deg Brix:acid ratio was considered a good indication of maturity. Fruits from the outer part of the tree were best picked at a ratio of 12:1 while the interior fruits were best harvested at a ratio of 14:1. At harvest the fruit stalks were cut as short as possible to prevent puncturing adjacent fruits which could then become infected. Fruits were graded by size into 4 classes: Extra Large, Large, Medium and A grade. Larger fruits had higher juice percentage, deg Brix:acid ratio and acidity than smaller fruits. Packing in wooden crates resulted in the lowest losses from rotting and maintained fruit quality, in comparison with other packaging materials.
