The markets for tropical fruits, with particular reference to Thailand, are briefly discussed. Postharvest characteristics (ethylene production, heat production, shelf life) and storage and transport problems (chilling injury, water loss, physiological disorders and fungal diseases) of the fruits are listed for durians, longans, litchis, mangoes and mangosteens. Examples of postharvest technology adopted by the trade from results of research at TISTR are outlined for these fruits and coconuts (marketed as immature green fruits).
