Postharvest decay resulting from preharvest (latent) infection by pathogens is the principal risk to fruits of the cultivars Irwin, Zill, Tommy Atkins, Kent and Keitt exported by sea from South Africa to western Europe. However, the cultivar Sensation normally shows little decay after arrival. The incidence of decay is influenced by the amount of summer rainfall and its distribution during the season. Storage conditions having a negative or positive effect on fruit quality and decay incidence are discussed and illustrated by data from various sources. Cold storage in transit for various cultivars is considered in relation to decay susceptibility and relevant lines of research are suggested.
