Control of decay of nectarines, apricots and plums by post-harvest fungicide application using an atomiser.

Postharvest application of 500 g/litre iprodione a.i. (as Rovral Aquaflow), 180 g/litre triforine a.i. (as Denarin), 500g/kg benomyl a.i. (as Benlate) and a triforine mix through atomizers gave effective control of postharvest decay on nectarines, apricots and plums caused by Botrytis cinerea, Monilinia laxa, Penicillium expansum and Rhizopus stolonifer. Iprodione was considered to be the most likely of the fungicides tested to be accepted for registration on apricots and nectarines. The application method requires some modification in order to minimize the damage caused to the market quality of the fruit caused by the rotating brushes. It is suggested that the technique will provide effective control of postharvest diseases without increasing the risk of fungicide residues exceeding the requirements for fruit export, provided pre-harvest sprays are applied according to recommendations.
