Mature avocado fruits (cultivars Dueke [Duke?] and Fuerte) were gamma-irradiated with 0.04 or 0.08 kGy or dipped in 1 or 1.5% Vapor Gard (an antitranspirant) for 2 min before being stored in boxes at room temperature (20 and 28 deg C for Dueke and Fuerte, respectively) or at 10 deg . Fruits were sampled at 4-day intervals. Irradiation treatments did not affect weight loss or fruit firmness in either cultivar during storage at room temperature, but significantly increased percentage decay in cv. Dueke fruits compared with untreated controls and Vapor Gard-treated fruits. Vapor-Gard treatments generally reduced weight loss and decay percentage in both cultivars during storage at room temperature, compared with controls. Similar results were observed during storage at 10 deg . Vapor Gard treatments were more effective than irradiation at delaying ripening and extending the shelf life of fruits stored at either room temperature or at 10 deg .
