The respiration and ethylene production rates of the cluster stalk (including most of the pedicel) in harvested grape (cv. Kyoho) clusters were markedly higher than those of the fruits, and showed climacteric-like changes. The ABA content in pedicels with the berry attached was significantly higher than in pedicels with the berry abscised. GA was present in the latter but was not detected in the former. Storage of clusters at 4 deg C greatly reduced berry abscission, compared with storage at 25 deg . Postharvest berry abscission was inhibited by treatment with GA, NAA or aminooxyacetic acid, and was promoted by ABA or Ethrel [ethephon].
