Postharvest deterioration of juice quality in detrashed and topped sugarcane stalks during Apr. in subtropical India was studied in 5 common cultivars (CoJ64, Co7717, CoS767, Co1158 and Co1148) and 3 promising new cultivars (CoH56, CoH77 and CoH35) developed at Uchani. In the first 24 h after harvesting, moisture loss led to an apparent increase in recoverable sucrose (determined as CCS = commercial cane sugar % cane), in every cultivar except CoS767, which showed a slight decrease. Pol, purity and CCS were considerably lower after 72 and 120 h; the decreases were smallest in the early-maturing, high-sugar CoH56 and greatest in CoS767, which lost more than half its initial sucrose in 5 days.
