The Programme of Development of Rural Agroindustry (PRODAR) in Latin America and the Caribbean was created in 1988 and was aimed at interrelating and integrating the efforts of international organizations and national entities towards the strengthening, stimulation and promotion of rural agroindustry in the region. It is directed especially towards the activities which value the production of small forestry, agricultural and fishery units, by carrying out a series of postharvest activities, such as storage, processing, transformation, preserving, packing, transport, and marketing of products. The programme carries out information-documentation activities (bulletins, consultation and documentation services, and data bank), training, research, and national networks. It is directed by a members' committee elected in a general assembly and is coordinated by an executive director, also chosen by a general assembly. It is concluded that the programme has proved that it is possible to transform peasants into small businessmen and to help the peasant sector of the region to survive. It is suggested that, for a better future for the peasant sector, three conditions are essential: a favourable policy towards the peasant sector; specialized technical, financial, commercial and administrative support services to rural agroindustry; and the generation of rural agroindustrial projects of great economic impact.
