The history of research and development into edible fungi, the present research infrastructure, research achievements in genetic resources and crop improvement, production technology (particularly of the 3 most commonly cultivated genera, Agaricus, Pleurotus and Volvariella), postharvest technology, pests and diseases, the impact of research on commercial cultivation, and future strategies for research are discussed. Production of edible fungi in India has increased from 2000 to 7000 t/year in the last decade, and the yield of button mushrooms (A. bisporus) has increased from 2-3 kg/m2 to 18-22 kg/m2 since 1965. Despite these advances, there is considerable scope for development, particularly with respect to the improvement of strains, consistency of yields, farm design, standards of hygiene, postharvest technology, publicity, and the production of less common edible fungi such as species of Calocybe, Auricularia and Agrocybe.
