Research on postharvest diseases of sweet potato has been limited, particularly in relation to tropical settings. The most important postharvest diseases of sweet potato, viz. Rhizopus soft rot (caused by Rhizopus stolonifer and other Rhizopus spp.), Java black rot (Botryodiplodia theobromae), Fusarium root rot (Fusarium solani), bacterial root rot (Erwinia chrysanthemi) and black rot (Ceratocystis fimbriata), are briefly described. Current approaches to controlling postharvest diseases of sweet potato, of which curing to promote wound healing is the best recognized, are outlined. Recently, methods have been developed for screening for storage rot resistance, and resistant sweet potato germplasm has been identified. Approaches to developing broad-spectrum postharvest disease resistance in sweet potato are considered. Future prospects for postharvest disease control research on sweet potato are discussed.
