Numbers of bacteria in aqueous solutions used for postharvest handling of cut flowers.

Water in which stems of cut flowers (carnations, chrysanthemums, freesias, gerberas, irises, lilies, roses and tulips) had been placed was sampled at grower sites, auctions, wholesale markets and retail sites. In a total of 3385 samples, the numbers of bacteria found were relatively low at the grower level, but became increasingly higher at auctions, wholesalers and retailers. When chlorine was used as an antibacterial chemical, the numbers of bacteria were low. However, use of floral preservatives (containing antibacterial chemicals and sugars) did not decrease the numbers of bacteria. The results suggest that the number of bacteria, especially at the retail level, was often high enough to reduce flower longevity.
